Research by HR consultancy Right Management indicates high performing managers spend twice as much time involved in workplace conversations than lower performers.
The study suggests staff members are more committed when a manager is part of the grapevine as they know what's going on, what's expected of them and how their performance is viewed.
But there are limits. While conversations about promotions, new arrivals and departures as well as business activities are all healthy, character assassination should always be avoided.
