Launch guest speaker

Photo_kferguson As a young professional and 2005 Brisbane Management Excellence Awards winner, Kirstin Ferguson, Director of Corporate Services & Chief Operating Officer at Deacons, is a wonderful Awards "case study".

Judges of the 2005 Brisbane Young Manager category found the decision of choosing a winner from among the candidates extremely difficult. They described Kirstin as a young, vibrant and enthusiastic individual with a great career ahead of her. They felt she demonstrated a maturity beyond her years.

Kirstin has proven herself to be successful in two male dominated industries. She conveyed to the judges just how tough she could be when required despite the fact she is very likable and someone with a great personal manner.

She hopes she demonstrates to others that you can achieve whatever inspires you and that age, having children or being a woman should never be seen as a barrier.

Kirstin’s greatest advice during her time in leading and managing has been to never compromise your integrity – always tell the truth and always speak up for those who cannot do so themselves.

Kirstin shared with the Launch guests her journey during last year's Management Excellence Awards, reinforcing the value to individuals who take part... and what a difference it will make to their career and development.

Welcome from Nanette Carroll

Photo_ncarroll Management Excellence Awards Chairman, Nanette Carroll FAIM, welcomes guests to the Brisbane Launch...

Ladies, Gentlemen and friends in Management, my name is Nanette Carroll, a member of the Board of the Australian Institute of Management and Chair of the Management Excellence Awards.

Welcome tonight to the Refresh Room at this gorgeous facility, home of Cutting Edge Productions, generous sponsor of our launch here in Brisbane.

For the past 6 years we have started the search for Queensland’s best managers by introducing our guests to innovative, creative spaces that are ‘off the beaten track’ but in themselves inspire creativity and success. We make it our mission to seek out Brisbane’s hidden secrets and introduce you to successful Queensland businesses and organisations that stand out in the crowd.

Let me start this evening by acknowledging AIM’s Chairman, Keith Hilless, fellow Board Members, Board Members of TheCyberInstitute, AIM’s online learning subsidiary, AIM’s National President, Gary Neat and AIM Executive in Residence, Joan Sheldon.

I also acknowledge Ray Smith, Managing Director of Cutting Edge, John Lee, CEO of Cutting Edge and Richard Abraham of Witches Falls Winery, wine sponsor for the evening.

Staging an awards program in a busy market takes energy and commitment to the longer term goal, that of promoting management as a profession and the natural extension of good management and leadership… good business.

The Management Excellence Awards now enters its 13th year in Queensland and 15th year in the Northern Territory. In all over 100 category winners and medalists have been judged and recognised by their peers over that time and the stories of self discovery and reflection, as well as the pragmatic outcomes of publicity and profile, have been shared by all in various degrees

This is my third year as Chairman of the Awards Committee, a group which works with three very important sets of stakeholders throughout the 10 month campaign: nominees, finalists and winners; judges; and sponsors. I am asked many questions about how to participate, but the one that sticks with me most is, “What makes the AIM Management Excellence Awards unique in an already crowded awards market?”

The answer is, the way in which we celebrate the individual, their growth and development and their influence on so many others as they lead their teams large or small. This is AIM’s paramount contribution to the art of management, which, in November, will culminate in a colourful Award spectacular which continues to be a sell out every year.

In recognising individual management and leadership endeavour, the Awards are an extension of the Institute’s broad charter, which, at a philosophical level, is to create better managers for a better society.

Last year four outstanding finalists were chosen, each extraordinary in their own right.

  • Rural and Remote Manager of the Year: Ann Radke, Owner of Yuruga Nursery from the Cairns Region
  • Young Manger of the Year: Steve Cleggett, B Squadron 1st Commander of 5 Aviation Regiment from the Townsville Region
  • Owner Manager of the Year: Glen Richards, Managing Director of Greencross Vets from the Townsville Region
  • Professional Manager of the Year: Ray Johnston, Principal of Tannum Sands State High School from the Gladstone Region

Every year we introduce to you outstanding sponsors who each have commitment to the category they chose to sponsor. Our sponsors have been with us for a long time… we like each other, know how to generate business opportunities, profile and leverage into Regional Queensland.

I commend to you The Commonwealth Bank, Griffith University, CPX Printing & Logistics, The Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries, Fisher and Paykel and Bartercard.

We recognise these generous organisations for their strategic foresight in linking their brand with AIM’s.

Tonight we are starting the journey for 2006… in leading the search for Queensland’s best managers… and you are on the hunt!

Who do you know within your spheres of influence within Brisbane who might fit the bill?  Which CEO or Managing Director will you tap on the shoulder after tonight’s event? Which entrepreneurial manager (no matter how busy they may be) will you encourage to consider these awards?

Which ‘bright young thing’ with all the energy and focus of a person on the way to the top will you seek out?

The next step is… how much time in your busy day tomorrow or next week (when you go back to work) will you devote to nominating? That’s the key… people of influence recognising other people of influence.

From where I stand it is easy to get passionate about the management agenda in this country and the role leadership plays in moving that agenda forward.

Nominations can be made online at www.managementawards.com.au or by calling 1300 882 895.
